Business Description

We train then place medical scribes in physicians' offices. They provide contemporaneous documentation of the visit saving physicians time and money. Doctors and patients are both happier.

What makes your business one of the best small businesses in your community?

It started with simply wanting a scribe for myself to help me with my documentation once our hospital computerized its medical records in 2010. But word of mouth and quality of product has seen ABC Scribes (Accurate Bedside Charting) grow to where we now serve over 60 physicians and their practices. Doctors don't have to stay late to finish records nor do records from home. They can see more patients and pay more attention to them instead of the computer. Everybody wins. We have provided jobs for hundreds of aspiring health care providers as well, many of whom are now doctors or PAs. We "wrote the book" on scribing (available on Amazon), started the first for-credit college course on scribing in the US at the University of Dayton (curriculum now being used by students at 6 area colleges) and have been involved in writing the standards nationally. Our scribes are spread out throughout the community but we maintain a small local family feel. Attention to detail is the key to our success.

The following responses will be considered in judging for a SCORE Award.

How has working with a SCORE mentor helped your business?

Having a SCORE mentor provided me with a perspective on the proper scope and limitations of my business. It helped me to prioritize what pieces I needed to have in place first and where my market advantages (and disadvantages) lay. I have been able to focus on my strengths and build the business slowly and methodically because I have not bit off more than I could chew.

Please describe the specific ways that your business has been successful and how it will grow in the next year.

ABC Scribes has been successful by focusing immediately on building on our broad base of competencies. A good scribe must have: strong documentation skills - we know documentation based on my 40 years of medical practice; billing and coding knowledge - we worked in my knowledge from being on the board of a medical billing company; knowledge of medical computer programs - I am a certified physician builder in Epic software; a strong course of study to build the skills - we wrote a text and set up university affiliated training programs and our own course. Business has grown by word of mouth until now. We are ready to take the business to the next level. In 2018 we will look to replicate our model outside of Dayton.
