Dental Lace, Inc. sells eco-friendly dental floss called Dental Lace Refillable Floss. Sales channels include wholesale, Amazon and our online store. Our first year (2017) sale revenue was $80,000.

What makes your business one of the best small businesses in your community?

Don’t worry I’m not a dentist. I’m not going to lecture you about the health benefits of flossing. What I can tell you is, there is no environmental benefit to plastic dental floss. This is why I retired as a school librarian and started Dental Lace, Inc. Dental Lace Refillable Floss is an eco-friendly dental floss device with biodegradable silk floss. Our first-year sales have gone from 0-1200 sales per week. It is sold in 25 countries and 36 U.S. stores, plus Amazon and our online store. In addition to creating an eco-friendly product we maintain a sustainable business. We are also committed to purchasing materials and services from our local community. Our eco-friendly product, our successful sales and our commitment to buying local is why we are the best business in our community.

How has working with a SCORE mentor helped your business?

Five years ago, I came to Alan with what some said was a crazy idea. He never flinched. From day one he helped me with my business plan, connected me with an award-winning brand designer and suggested SCORE workshops, packaging companies etc. He is always available to provide valuable feedback. When I was awarded The Source Sustainability Award, Alan attended the ceremony. Kathleen with her background in dentistry marketing, helped me maneuver the rules and regulations of selling dental floss. She also connected me with experienced mentors. She too is always available to provide valuable feedback. Dental Lace, Inc. is a success because Alan and Kathleen give me the resources and the confidence when I need it most.

Please describe the specific ways that your business has been successful and how it will grow in the next year.

Dental Lace, Inc. is successful because we create a unique dental floss product and we’re frugal Mainers. Dental Lace Refillable Floss is the only fashionable eco-friendly floss device on the market. We manage the company with no outside investment. We watch our numbers closely and act accordingly. We use free services to keep our expenses low. For example, Dental Lace was promoted worldwide for less than $500. There’s great potential for Dental Lace Refillable Floss in the U.S. We’ll increase our focus on the U.S. market. We’ll continue letter writing with free samples, social media promotion and cold-calls. We’ll also solicit sponsorship for trade shows and conferences. And we’ll ask our SCORE mentors for suggestions.
