Palmetto Kids Cooking

Business Description

Our classes and camps provide hands-on cooking instruction focused on holistic nutrition. We offer preschool, elementary, and middle school classes. (Adding high school and dorm-life prep classes).

How does your business make a positive impact on the community?

1. Palmetto Kids Cooking has made a powerful impact on the families of children who have participated in our classes and camps over the last year. Parents are often astounded at how much their child learned during our short program. According to parents, the family food dollars are being spent on healthier choices because their child (as young as 7) is reading food labels and putting bad choices back on the shelf in the grocery store. 2. We have also proudly partnered with several children's organizations for various events, and afterschool programs in two local Title 1 schools. 3. As a part of our Camp Cook and Glow curriculum we have partnered with several wellness practitioners in our community.

What would you do with a $1,000 Sam’s Club gift card, training, and help from a SCORE mentor to grow your business?

I would be so thankful to receive a $1,000 Sam's Club gift card! I already have the totes picked out and other supplies for mobile kitchens that would enable us to serve more locations and hire more instructors - this would mean more camps, more afterschool programs, more options for birthday parties, workshops and other events. What would I do with training and help from a SCORE mentor? I would be coachable. There is no doubt that I would grow my business. Hearing ideas for growth from a different perspective would be welcomed, and it's super exciting to even consider the possibilities.

The following responses will be considered in judging for a SCORE Award.

How has working with a SCORE mentor helped your business?

Each class, afterschool program, camp, and other products may be negotiated at a different amount. I have had trouble trying to navigate a bookkeeping system that I know could help me do better with the breakdown and measuring profit within each category. My mentor is a wealth of information and is helping me identify some errors that I inadvertently created. He will be instrumental in helping me avoid unnecessary ‘issues’ by helping me create a solid bookkeeping system, and referring me to marketing help that I need for this type of business and the vision that I have for the future of Palmetto Kids Cooking.

Have you had to overcome any obstacles along the way to build your business?

Many people thought that cooking classes for children was a cute hobby for me. It wasn’t until parents started asking why we didn’t have classes for parents that people started seeing the value of the content we teach their children. Little did I know that changing people’s perspective was going to be the least in the line of obstacles in 2016. Aside from cash flow issues in my business and scrambling to pay for class supplies and instructor fees (often out of my personal funds), there have been medical issues, and the biggest heartbreak of all was the death of my brother in September. It is by the grace of God that we are still serving others, which only makes us stronger.

How will you utilize the marketing video and national recognition of winning a SCORE Award to help take your business to the next level?

More people need to know about what we do, and how valuable our classes are to children. The marketing video and national recognition of winning will help with awareness and website traffic. Ultimately, we will have e-commerce with certain items, books, and affiliations. The recognition alone would take us to the next level.
