Business Description

FUNKY STUFF the Collective is a store where you can buy offerings from a brilliant collection of hand crafted one of a kind things created by on average 25-30 amazing local artists.

What one unique aspect of your business will make you succeed over the next year?

Operating as a Collective is our uniquely functional way of working within our community. Our artisans are not consignors, they are members. Each person contributes towards the success of the whole, and that attitude is conveyed through our customers and clients out into the community. Numerous fundraising and collection events have built a strong, lasting relationship with the people of the community, turning repeat customers into regular friends. Knowing that there is always a class to look forward to, a food drive or charity auction to participate in, or a new product to enjoy from our multi-talented artists has kept our neighbors returning to FUNKY STUFF the Collective LLC month after month. We come together as a collective to offer new products and services, and whatever it is you need done or made, one of us can do it or figure out a way to make it! There are no limits to your imagination with our exceptional team.

How does your business make a positive impact on the community?

FUNKY STUFF the Collective LLC has been in operation for 16 months. In that time it has been host to 10 charity events and has also attended several local charity activities. In total, FUNKY STUFF has collected over $4300 in money and items. Some of the agencies contributed to are the local Food Banks, the local Canine Control and Dog Park Fund, a therapeutic Equestrian facility, the local High School Art Department, and Family Services. To help encourage artistic personal expression some of the events have included an art show and an open mic night. Other events have included collections of various needed or requested items. The events have encouraged involvement of Collective participants and community to benefit various local charities.

What would you do with a $1,000 Sam’s Club gift card, training, and help from a SCORE mentor to grow your business?

The Sam’s Club gift card would be used to purchase a folding table and chairs set, a laptop, and a Quickbooks computer program. FUNKY STUFF would use the table and chairs to increase the number of participants in monthly classes. Participating in art classes can help increase confidence, foster creativeness, reduce stress and be incredibly fun. The classes would increase the number of people that are exposed to art and all FUNKY STUFF has to offer. A new laptop would help maintain the FaceBook page and all the store’s computer needs. Quickbooks would simplify bookkeeping. The invaluable training and help from a SCORE mentor would help with business training, creative marketing ideas, increasing advertising and creating a website.

The following responses will be considered in judging for a SCORE Award.

How has working with a SCORE mentor helped your business?

I have not worked with a Score Mentor. I look forward to the opportunity.

Have you had to overcome any obstacles along the way to build your business?

I have had to work through the obstacles of opening a business in the past year.

How will you utilize the marketing video and national recognition of winning a SCORE Award to help take your business to the next level?

National exposure would help with exposure to CT local artists and local one-of-a-kind art. It would also allow us create a website and generate online sales. Again increasing the exposure to CT artists and their creations.
