Business Description

Grand Island Waste Mgmt. LLC is located on an Island in the Niagara River between Buffalo NY and Niagara Falls. We Provide Septic Service, Portable toilet Rentals and Boat and RV tank Cleanings.

What one unique aspect of your business will make you succeed over the next year?

An island would seem too small a territory for a pumper, but not for Jim Ehde. Grand Island, New York, has been his home for many years and is now the site and source of his new wastewater business. And a rich source it is. Grand Island sits in the Niagara River just a couple of miles upstream of the famous waterfalls. Part of it is served by onsite wastewater systems. Part of it is served by a small municipal wastewater plant. All of it is surrounded by urban America. A freeway crossing the island brings commuters from the nearby cities of Buffalo and Niagara Falls, and the combination of open land and easy access to water makes Grand Island a recreation hub as well as a place for year-round residents. This combination of people and place creates several business opportunities, and the spread of nearby cities has pushed the competition far enough away to leave Grand Island Waste Management with an almost wide-open territory that Ehde is just beginning to explore.By Living and Playing on this Island for my entire life has given me many many contacts to continue to grow my business.

How does your business make a positive impact on the community?

You’re on an island, and most of the septic tanks are within a half mile of the river. We do have some of the poorer water quality rates in the area. I want to help solve this problem by pushing for more education and 3-5 year pumping rule, but the data to do so does not exist to support his position to the degree he would like. A non-profit group has done some water sampling, but some samples were taken near a golf courses, so phosphorus runoff may be skewing the results. He wants to have his own samples taken and tested so he can be sure of the results. I have applied for a position on the conservation board to help educate the residents on the importance of Maintaining your septic system.

What would you do with a $1,000 Sam’s Club gift card, training, and help from a SCORE mentor to grow your business?

I would purchase food and clothing for the homeless and donate it. One of the Areas I need help in is Bidding on contracts so I would use a score mentor for that type of assistance.

The following responses will be considered in judging for a SCORE Award.

How has working with a SCORE mentor helped your business?

It helped me take my business for concept to startup, 4 years later I still meet with my mentor to discuss upcoming ideas and areas I need help in, Recently we where featured speaker at the score luncheon for the simple steps course score created.

Have you had to overcome any obstacles along the way to build your business?

Yes, recently we won a 4 year contract to transfer Sludge waste off of Grand Island. No banks would assist with loaning us the cash to by the Septic truck needed to transfer the sludge off Grand Island.Even though we had a signed 4 year contract worth 250,000.00 dollars. I had to put 20 percent and get the truck through the dealer.

How will you utilize the marketing video and national recognition of winning a SCORE Award to help take your business to the next level?

Most of it will be on the education of pumping your septic system on a regular basis. Maintaining your septic is better for our environment Septic tank systems are the largest of all contributors of wastewater to the ground and are the most frequently reported sources of groundwater contamination in the United States. Bacteria, viruses, and parasites (including worms and protozoans) are the types of pathogens in wastewater that are hazardous to humans. Fungi that can cause skin, eye, and respiratory infections. Household Wastewater -Contain diseases, High levels of nitrogen and phosphorus. If a septic system is well-maintained and working properly, it will remove most of these pollutants.
