Spindaroos is an online store in Denver, Colorado that produces a premium line of performance cycling apparel for children ages 6 months to 12 years who not only compete but also bike for fun.
What one unique aspect of your business will make you succeed over the next year?
This business started when my husband became an avid cyclist and I wanted to my child to be in a supportive bike jersey to cheer her father on. I could not find one, so I made one and discovered a niche in the sports market. Spindaroos is the result and has become a passion. As I created other Spindaroos, I discovered that children that wore their Spindaroos received empowering benefits; in that it encouraged physical activity in the children, as well as served as a mechanism to bond children with their parents. I noticed that Spinadroos became a conditioning mechanism for parents to instill in their children healthy activity habits. Spindaroos will succeed for the following reasons: it is a high-quality product focused on one niche of the clothing market, bike jerseys; thus I know who is going to buy my product, and I can tailor Spindaroos specifically to those people, as not everyone wants to wear the same style and design. Spindaroos has little competition for the moment, thus if I corner the market, that competition will remain limited. It is said that successful people have not achieved their success by talent, but by developing the opportunity that was at hand.
How does your business make a positive impact on the community?
Spindaroos is very involved in our community. We host fundraisers for the local hospital where we also volunteer our time. We also focus on our youth and their need for physical activity. To encourage cycling and other physical activity in our youth, we host fundraisers but also donate a bike jersey tailored specifically to the winner. We host youth oriented cycling contests. Cycling is a wonderful aerobic workout, one that has low environmental impact and becomes a great source of satisfaction to the cyclist, no matter their age.
What would you do with a $1,000 Sam’s Club gift card, training, and help from a SCORE mentor to grow your business?
The funding would be used to buy a computer necessary to facilitate my business, as well as used to buy necessary materials used to create Spindaroos. My mentor would be of inestimable value to me. Spindaroos needs a promotion strategy and my mentor’s advice would be value to me. My mentor’s recommendations would be appreciated as I plan my long-term business goals, my marketing strategy and in creating and strengthening my business plan, something very necessary if I am to gather additional funding. My mentor has already walked this path, so any advice given will be heeded. Finally, my mentor would give me peace of mind as I would have someone available with the knowledge and trustworthiness to answer my questions.
The following responses will be considered in judging for a SCORE Award.
How has working with a SCORE mentor helped your business?
Have you had to overcome any obstacles along the way to build your business?
Yes. My primary obstacle has been finding a manufacturer who produces quality apparel, is dependable and reasonably priced. I currently have some of our garments produced overseas and some are produced here in Denver. The garments that are produced overseas are premium in quality, and priced reasonably, however the companies are not dependable. The garments made in Denver lack the quality and are too expensive. Moving forward, to overcome this problem, I would like to assemble local sewers here in Denver, Colorado, to manufacture all of our apparel "in-house".
How will you utilize the marketing video and national recognition of winning a SCORE Award to help take your business to the next level?
In winning the SCORE Award, my hope is to bring awareness to the health benefits of cycling in combatting childhood obesity. We are passionate about the well-being of all children. We believe we are creating the next generation of healthy adults by encouraging children to ride.
