Business Description

Shea BODYWORKS is a grass roots company that makes small batch natural skin care products for dry to extremely dry skin. We use natural and simple ingredients that are easy to recognize and pronounce.

What one unique aspect of your business will make you succeed over the next year?

Shea BODYWORKS is big on connecting with consumers who purchase natural products. One unique aspect of our business is that we like to show people how using natural and simple ingredients can work wonders on the skin. We love creating product awareness by doing In-store demonstrations. When connecting with our customers we get immediate feedback which is instrumental to our growth. Also, we love to educate them about ingredients that are born in a lab versus those that come from nature. When we provide customers with this information there is always an "Aha Moment". We feel that providing customers with great products is awesome, however educating them will foster a partnership of trust and they will become evangelist for Shea BODYWORKS as well as repeat customers.

How does your business make a positive impact on the community?

Shea BODYWORKS is big on giving back to the community. We are passionate about giving back, so during the winter months, we collect gloves and socks and donate them to different organizations. Also, we volunteer at organizations like Gleaners, Salvation Army and local church food banks year round.

What would you do with a $1,000 Sam’s Club gift card, training, and help from a SCORE mentor to grow your business?

Winning a $1000 Sam's Club gift card along with training and a SCORE mentor would be wondrous for Shea BODYWORKS. We would use the $1000 gift card to purchase office equipment. In addition, a SCORE mentor and training would help us to improve upon our current marketing campaign to create a sales funnel that would lead to repeat sales. Also, the mentor would be able to assist us in mapping out new growth strategies.

The following responses will be considered in judging for a SCORE Award.

How has working with a SCORE mentor helped your business?

The SCORE mentors were instrumental in each stage of my business. I've worked with several mentors since starting the company. In the beginning stage, the mentors guided me through the FDA requirements, packaging and reviewed my business plan. Since the initial meeting in 2014, the SCORE mentors have provided marketing tips, reviewed and critiqued the company website and presented business strategies that were easy to implement. Thus, our products are now in our local Whole Foods Market and several other businesses in the Indianapolis area.

Have you had to overcome any obstacles along the way to build your business?

When the company started, we had a flawed marketing strategy and pitched to everyone. We spent a lot of time and money pitching to people with very little interest in our product and learned a valuable lesson in marketing. Since rebranding, we have narrowed our target market and have a new look. Our new company message now resonates with our ideal customer.

How will you utilize the marketing video and national recognition of winning a SCORE Award to help take your business to the next level?

The marketing video would help us to tell the story of Shea BODYWORKS and how being a burn victim as a child lead me to create a product for my daughter and start a business. Also, it would help to promote our products and inspire other entrepreneurs. In addition, receiving a SCORE Award would be an honor. It would validate me as an entrepreneur and recognize the SCORE mentors that have helped me to navigate the treacherous waters of entrepreneurship.
