Kinda Kreative, LLC.
Kinda Kreative's mission is to inspire & empower people to express themselves freely, take the next steps in their journey to self-discovery & celebrate their inherent worth.
What one unique aspect of your business will make you succeed over the next year?
I think the most unique facet of my business (& something encouraged by my SCORE mentors) is my vulnerability in sharing my own journey - the ups and the downs - & connecting with clients/followers on a deeper, more intimate level. Whether it is through my artwork, public speaking, coaching or the #ReclaimBeauty project, I am in this with everyone around me and so rather than creating another platform where people seek services and support from "a professional" or someone they deem to be in a superior place, I am standing next to my clients and making it easier for them to uncover and celebrate their own worth and voice as I let them know that I, too, fight their fight. This has allowed me to develop not only quality services but lasting partnerships and support with people who always know that I am here to support them in whatever way possible - no judgment, no shame. The human experience is a winding journey and we cannot truly serve others if we are not jumping in the waters with them.
How does your business make a positive impact on the community?
My work focuses on helping people uncover & celebrate their inherent beauty & worth. A mental health professional, I provide enlightening & therapeutic experiences to clients & find that my broad range of services allows them to engage at the level they feel most comfortable. I focus on the coming together of the identities we hold that make us who we are & help people not only celebrate them but find joy & passion in all they do & search for. I appreciate the struggles, understand setbacks, & create space for people to find forgiveness, empowerment & courage to take the next steps in their journey, knowing they are not alone in this fight. This work creates a ripple effect that leads from individual changes to lasting community impact.
What would you do with a $1,000 Sam’s Club gift card, training, and help from a SCORE mentor to grow your business?
We're filming a documentary for the #ReclaimBeauty project we hope to show in schools & community centers statewide. The focus of the film is to stop the cycle of self loathing, bullying, & "otheredness" we fall into & find common ground for love & support for ourselves & each other. I'd use the gift card to buy food/materials to bring the film into lower SES communities & provide meals to attendees while engaging in deep conversation & social change. I would use the training & continued mentorship to develop a stronger business plan, working specifically on marketing & financing my business. I want to provide sliding scale services and make support as accessible as possible throughout communities while building a sustainable business.
The following responses will be considered in judging for a SCORE Award.
How has working with a SCORE mentor helped your business?
I think the biggest thing it has done for me is given me the courage to take the jump into my work, knowing that I am not alone in this and minimizing my fears about failure. They have helped me to think bigger and have forced me to think about longevity by asking the hard questions, such as getting paid and how much I would need to sustain the business. I am currently working on a 5-year business plan we will be reviewing at the end of the month. They've also empowered me, as a woman, to pursue my entrepreneurial dreams which is inspiring coming from all male mentors.
Have you had to overcome any obstacles along the way to build your business?
One of the major things I am working on now is visibility as Madison, WI is saturated with entrepreneurs. I have also had to be very creative about marketing, fundraising & overall development as I have extremely limited funds. Additionally, I have had to work hard to move what others have deemed a "hobby"/"side hustle" into a business where people take it more seriously & understand I cannot afford to do things (art, coaching/support) for free or favors anymore. I have had to think sustainability and big picture which has made me have to say no a lot more & stick to the mission of the business in every decision I make. My mentors remind me this is not "mean" but necessary for survival especially in these initial years of growth.
How will you utilize the marketing video and national recognition of winning a SCORE Award to help take your business to the next level?
I think the biggest way I can use this honor/recognition would be to talk about the ways I set myself apart & expand that more into what will set me apart from other people in the same line of work as me. It will help me establish a platform of notability and trustworthiness having been vetted by an already trusted group of organizations and will legitimize the work I am doing. Also, as a big part of my application has been about authenticity & vulnerability, I will show that clients/supporters & allow them to connect more about what I have gone through, my fears and self-doubt in even applying for this & empower them to take the next steps, or even leaps, no matter how fear is showing up for them - hopefully with my services!
